Base oil is the raw oil used as a base for manufacturing engine oils, hydraulic oils, gear oils, and greases.

  • Derived either from crude oil refining (mineral oils)
  • Or from chemical synthesis (synthetic oils) like PAO, Esters

Global Classifications of Base Oils

According to the API (American Petroleum Institute) classification, base oils are divided into 5 main groups:
