What is IFO fuel?

IFO, or Intermediate Fuel Oil, is a type of heavy fuel used primarily in large ships and industrial generators, derived from residual petroleum after distillation processes.

IFO is a blend of:

  • Residual Oil (heavy residual oil)
  • Distillates (light distillates)

The purpose of blending them is to reduce the viscosity of the heavy oil, making it suitable for pumping and combustion in marine and industrial engines.

Compliance with international regulations (IMO 2020)

Since 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has required that the sulfur content in all types of fuel used in ships be: ≤ 0.5% (unless the ship uses an exhaust gas cleaning system - Scrubber)

Thus, much of IFO now falls under:

  • Low Sulfur IFO (LSFO) ≤ 0.5%
  • Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) ≤ 0.1–0.5%
